Analysis of Foreign Theoretical Studies of Spatial-Demographic Processes (19th – 21st Centuries)

Since the mid-19th century, the global scientific community began to develop a system for researching spatial-demographic issues. Foreign academic discussion on the spatial features of demographic processes has evolved into a major scientific area that has found widespread practical application today. This paper identifies the characteristics of academic discussion on spatial demographic change from the mid19th through the early 21st century based on the theoretical perspectives of foreign scholars. It uses specialized historical methods such as problem-chronological and retrospective analysis. The mid 1800-s is considered the starting point for the history of academic debate on spatial demographics. The pioneers of spatial demographic research worldwide include, among others, John Snow, Hu Huanyong, Glenn Thomas Trewartha, Philip Hauser, and Otis Dudley Duncan. Since the middle of the 1700-s, the field of space demography and its theoretical foundations began to emerge in the late 1900-s. At that time, foreign researchers Andrei Rogers, Suzuki Keisuke, Barbara Entwistle, Robert Woods, and Philip Rees sought to determine the place of space demographics within the global demographic knowledge system. At the beginning of the 1990-s and 2000-s, first practical experiences with implementing research projects in space-demographic areas were gained. The development of international academic discussion around space demographic theory demonstrates a gradual formation of a subject area for one of the most significant scientific areas in the visualization of spatial data.
