As a rhetorical device, hyperbole is essential in song lyrics, intensifying emotions and creating vivid and relatable impressions on listeners. This study investigates the manifestation, similarities, and differences in the use of hyperbole in English and Vietnamese song lyrics. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the study examines 14 hit songs (7 in English and 7 in Vietnamese) from various genres and analyzes the use, forms, and functions of hyperbole. The results demonstrate that hyperbole is employed in both languages to emphasize universal themes such as love, nostalgia, gratitude, and resilience. However, English lyrics often use hyperbole in a direct and dramatic manner, visual phrases like "a million years" or "going to the ends of the earth." In contrast, Vietnamese lyrics tend to be more poetic and metaphorical, incorporating expressions inspired by nature and rooted in cultural traditions. These differences reflect distinct cultural perspectives and aesthetic sensibilities in each language. Our findings will contribute to a deeper understanding of hyperbole’s role in lyrical composition and its impact on emotional expression, providing a foundation for further research on figurative language in music.
