The Theory of the Leisure Class and Conspicuous Consumption in Thorstein Veblen's Thought.  (An Analytical Theoretical Study)

Class differentiation encompasses social and cultural reflections. Thorstein Veblen conducts a detailed analysis of the leisure class in modern societies. According to his theory, the upper class possesses a distinctive cultural ownership that manifests conspicuous consumption patterns, while simultaneously employing leisure time as a mechanism for displaying and signifying social status. Within this framework, this class, through various factors, establishes values that are perceived as characteristic of society's upper echelons. From this perspective, other social classes attempt to emulate or associate themselves with these values in order to attain the status of the upper class and present themselves as individuals possessing prestige and distinction. The main objective is to determine what is meant by conspicuous consumption among the leisure class. Additionally, the study seeks to understand how leisure time becomes an instrument of conspicuous behavior among the upper class. This research adopts a qualitative approach, relying on analytical methodology, and endeavors to examine Veblen's theory of the leisure class. Therefore, the primary research question concerns how Veblen analyzes the leisure class in modern societies and the manner and instruments through which this class manifests itself in relation to conspicuous consumption culture. Concurrently, One of the principal findings of this research is that the leisure class, according to Veblen's theory, continuously demonstrates itself as the upper class through the ownership of material capital, particularly in modern industrial societies. Consequently, the upper class at that stage is situated at the apex of consumption, and in this regard, they introduce specific values and standards related to this phenomenon into society. Simultaneously, the leisure class displays its prestige through the expenditure of time on elite sports and gatherings (such as horse riding, golf, and lawn tennis).
