The Ghost Triptych: Ghost Learning, Ghost Transformation, and Ghost GDP as a Diagnostic Framework for Institutional Failure

This working paper introduces the Ghost Triptych, a three-panel diagnostic framework for identifying where knowledge appears to move through educational, institutional, and economic systems but produces no durable change. Ghost Learning describes the classroom-level performance of knowledge acquisition without the development of cognitive capacity. Ghost Transformation describes the institutional-level performance of change without the structural conditions to produce it. Ghost GDP, a term coined by Citrini Research (2026), describes economic output that registers in national data but never circulates through the real economy. Together, the three ghosts reveal a single structural pattern operating at different levels of scale. The paper argues that ghost failures concentrate disproportionately in historically marginalized communities, positioning the framework as both a diagnostic and an equity tool. Implications for knowledge brokering, institutional design, and education policy are discussed.
