Awareness on emergency responses to cardiac arrest among the peri-urban adult community in Colombo district, Sri Lanka

Background: Cardiac arrest is the sudden cessation of the heart’s mechanical activity and remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, often linked to non-communicable diseases, occurring in both medical and non-medical environments such as homes, workplaces, and public spaces. Therefore, fundamental knowledge of immediate interventions is crucial in improving survival outcomes. This study was conducted in Peri-urban regions often reflecting the socioeconomic status of a country to assess the awareness levels regarding emergency responses to cardiac arrest among adults in the Colombo district of Sri Lanka. Aims and Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the awareness of emergency responses to cardiac arrest among peri-urban adults in the Colombo District, Sri Lanka. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in five peri-urban Medical Officer of Health areas: Piliyandala, Boralesgamuwa, Ratmalana, Maharagama, and Homagama. A total of 424 participants were surveyed using an interviewer-administered questionnaire addressing sociodemographic variables and specific study objectives. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Results: Participants had a mean knowledge score of 144.2 out of 250 (standard deviation=37.7). High awareness was observed in 42.2%, moderate in 41.7%, and low in 16%. The average age was 38 years, with women comprising 54.2%. Notably, 82.8% had never received cardio-pulmonary resuscitation training, though 79% expressed willingness to learn. Conclusion: The study highlights significant knowledge gaps in cardiac arrest interventions. Enhancing community awareness is essential to improve survival rates and reduce mortality.
