I thank Dr Wonderly for her important message about the tragic death of one of our own. Like others, I experienced a mix of emotions—sadness, anger, and disbelief—after learning about the shooting death of critical care nurse Alex Pretti, on the streets of Minneapolis. Many nursing and health care organizations, including the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, Society of Critical Care Medicine, American Nurses Association, American Academy of Nursing, and American Association of Colleges of Nursing issued statements after Mr Pretti’s death, calling for the de-escalation of harm and reminding us that, as nurses, we have a moral obligation to speak up for what is right.1–5 I encourage nurses to find their voice and speak out in ways that feel authentic.6 I hope that the actionable items provided by Dr Wonderly will be helpful to members of our nursing community as we seek opportunities to channel our grief and honor the legacy of nurse Alex Pretti.
