Dataset for the brief communication: "Contextualizing the September 2024 extreme precipitation in Austria within the climatological record" This repository provides processed precipitation data. Annual Rx5day on a gridded (SPARTACUS) and tabular (TAWES stations) basis, as well as modelled and empirical return periods. Methods The data has been processed in the form of (please see the manuscript for technical details): Rolling 5-day precipitation sums Annual maxima of rolling 5-day precipitation sums (Rx5day) Modelled and Empirical return periods Input data sources The original source data are daily climatological fields (SPARTACUS) and daily station data (TAWES) from: Gridded accumulated precipitation: SPARTACUS (Hiebl et al, 2017) [v2.1] Station-based accumulated daily precipitation: TAWES (GeoSphere Austria) [v2] The source input data can be downloaded from the GeoSphere Austria Data Hub: Gridded precipitation (SPARTACUS): https://doi.org/10.60669/m6w8-s545 Station precipitation (TAWES): https://doi.org/10.60669/gs6w-jd70 Station IDs from TAWES: [5625,5601,5604,5606,5607,5609,4080,4081,7110,10510,10511,6540,5410,5412,7000,7001,7002,1730,3520](Note that some stations have multiple IDs due to being slightly relocated over time. The latest ID is used for indexing.) Description of data SPARTACUS_RRhr_Rx5d_1960-2024_annual.nc: gridded annual Rx5day (maximum of 5-day rolling precipitation sums) from SPARTACUS station_locations.csv: Station ID and coordinates in degrees (latitude, longitude) station_data.csv: Unprocessed station data {rps|rls}.{json|csv}: json output from extreme value analysis (return periods and levels) station_data_pivot.csv: Pivoted (wide*) table of station data (one column per station) station_data_pivot_rx5day.csv: Rolling 5-day precipitation sums in the same wide format station_data_pivot_rx5day_year.csv: Rx5day, which is the annual maximum of the rolling 5‑day precipitation sums in the same wide format *wide table format: each station is a separate column, rows are aligned by time/index.
