Narrating the Anthropocene: An Ecocritical Reading of Amitav Ghosh's Novels

Abstract The Anthropocene is the age in which human activity has caused major changes to the Earth's climate, ecosystems, and environment. Literature plays an important role in helping people understand these changes. This paper studies how Amitav Ghosh tells the story of this environmental crisis in three of his works The Hungry Tide (2004), Gun Island (2019), and The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable (2016). The paper looks at the writing methods Ghosh uses to represent ecological problems and argues that his importance as a writer comes not just from the environmental topics he chooses but from the way he tells those stories. He uses different time periods, local myths, and the perspectives of ordinary people to make the ecological crisis feel real and urgent. This paper reads his works through the lens of ecocriticism and concludes that Ghosh offers one of the most thoughtful literary responses to environmental crisis in Indian English literature today.
