Implementing low traffic neighbourhoods to the expansion of cycle networks

Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) oer an opportunity to expand urban cycling networks eectively by routing cyclists through existing low stress streets. However, cycling networks in the UK remain disjointed, and LTNs are typically not used for city-wide network planning. To address this gap, we propose methods to compare cycling network growth strategies which incorporate LTNs. We study a scenario where LTNs are neglected, one where existing LTNs are considered, and one where additional LTNs are introduced. Applying our method to the Tyne & Wear metropolitan region, we nd that strategies which prioritise the connections between LTNs create networks at a lower initial investment cost, whilst becoming less fragmented and better connected when compared to other approaches.
