The Role of Virtual Learning in Post-Pandemic Education

This chapter aims to explore the role of virtual learning in post-pandemic education in Fiji universities. Using a qualitative research approach, the opinions of academics from the four Fiji universities were examined. The institutional work paradigm of neo-institutional theory provided theoretical insight. The findings suggest that while academics could implement various strategies, from flexible content delivery, interactive teaching, to advocating for better infrastructure and student well-being, these efforts alone are not enough. Meaningful progress requires shared responsibilities. Students have to take ownership of their learning through active participation and self-motivation, while institutions must provide the necessary resources and systems to create an enabling learning environment. The post-pandemic issues in education can only be successfully resolved by these combined efforts. This study emphasizes the significance of virtual learning and teaching as a powerful complement, forming the basis for a more effective blended/hybrid educational model as the way forward.
