The engineering legacy of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022: Ahmed bin Ali stadium – the desert gateway

This paper describes the structural system adopted for the concrete bowl and the unique roof structure that were successfully designed and implemented for the Ahmed bin Ali stadium. A new type of structural roof system – the ring girder truss roof – was developed and implemented at the stadium. It is a further advancement and an optimised evolution of linear trusses employed as large-spanning roof structures. This paper describes the structural principles and the construction methodology and challenges in detail. The facade structural system, which supports cladding panels that are designed to reflect the traditional and local culture, is also described.
